Rick Anderson is a true blue Skyhawk. He taught Social Studies for 40 years at Deer Valley High School, opening the school in 1980 and retiring in 2019. He taught Economics, History, Government, Driver’s Education, Math, English, and Special Education students during his tenure. His goal was to always make learning fun and applicable, employing learning models such as the infamous Wedding Project. When he was not in the classroom, he could be found shaping some of DV’s best athletes coaching Soccer, Track, Baseball, Volleyball, Tennis, Softball, Basketball, Wrestling, and Golf. He also announced Friday Night DV football games for 32 years.
His passionate and demanding coaching style led his sports teams to over 450 wins, 7 region championships, and 2 final four appearances and was recognized with 6 Coach of the Year awards. He was strong advocate for community based programs for families. He was instrumental in implementing DV YMCA at DVHS and later NYS. None of this could be accomplished without strong support from his wife Marilyn. Their love for Deer Valley High School and its students did not end upon his retirement. His time here has afforded them many blessings and he and his wife would like to pay it forward by providing this $1250 Academic Scholar Award. Their hope is if and then circumstances allow you the same blessings, you can pay it forward to future Skyhawks or other deserving candidates.
